Femifist #42

Team:

Raging Rockets

Main Position:

Blocker, and I'm a wanna-be pivot. I've played the position in a couple of games, but I'm much more comfortable being bossed around in the pack. This might surprise some people, but I take direction well in the pack. Not so much in other areas of my life.

Years Skated:

4 years

Previous Teams:

I started training with the DC Rollergirls, but never got to bout for them.

Derby Crush:

OMG WTF

Derby Nemisis:

This is lame, but I don't think I have one!

Worst Injury:

I've been strangely lucky when it comes to injuries. I did once accidentally pinch my chub with a bearing puller and it was the worst bruise I've ever had!

Best Accomplisment:

Managing the Apprentice Program for the Women's Flat Track Derby Association

A little about Femifist:

I've been skating with the Dixie Derby Girls since the summer of 2007. I love the camaraderie, competition, and spending so much time in a woman-centered space. Being a feminist is a huge part of who I am and that transfers over to my roller derby experience. There are a lot of strong women in Roller Derby, but there is controversy about whether the sport is feminist or not. For me, maybe not for everyone, but at least for me it is. We come from all different education levels, socio-economic backgrounds, sexuality, professions, etc. We are a collective of hard-hitting, fast-skating, women that are democratically running our own non-profit. Are expectations for women in general changing? Sure, but our society's dominant construction of femininity is still way to constraining, in my opinion. And anything we do to challenge that throws a monkey wrench into the system. How is that not feminist?
