The Dixie Derby Girls Roller Derby League is dedicated to bringing the sport of roller
derby to Huntsville, Alabama. We are dedicated to running a safe, competitive, and
professional league. As members in good standing of the Women’s Flat Track Derby
Association (WFTDA), we foster and promote the growth of flat track roller derby
nationwide.

What the heck is roller derby anyway? Isn’t it fake, like professional wrestling?

Roller derby is a competitive, contact sport with no choreographing. Theatrics are part of the game, but nothing is fake or scripted.

The game is played in heats or “jams” that can last up to 2 minutes. There are 2 thirty minute game periods with an unlimited number of jams in each. Two teams play in each jam, with 5 players in the rink for each team – the pack

Each pack starts with 1 pivot, 1 jammer, and 3 blockers. The packs start with their pivots in front, blockers in the middle, and jammers in the back. On the first whistle, the packs take off, and on the second whistle, the jammers fight their way through the pack in an attempt to become the lead jammer. After lapping the packs once, the jammers receive one point for each member of the opposing team that they pass. The lead jammer can call off the jam at any time.

More Information

Who can play?

• Any girl age 19 or older can play as long as she can make the time commitment to practice and be involved with the League. There is no such thing as too old for derby!

• We recommend that you have Individual health insurance, but it is not required. Injuries do happen and they can be expensive. You will be covered for liability and excess injury through league insurance.

• Train on and off the rink. Attendance at 60% of the available practices per month is mandatory.

• Be Involved with off-rink activities, such as fundraisers and promotions

• Purchase skates (quad speed skates, not inline) and protective gear -we have connections through skateboarding and roller skating shops to get reasonably priced gear.

• Understand that roller derby is a competitive, contact sport and minor injuries are a part of the game.

Do I have to be an athlete? I haven’t skated in years! What if I’m out of shape?

Doesn’t matter! Many of us hadn’t been on skates since junior high before joining the League. We train everyone from beginners to advanced skaters, and we will help you any way we can. Just put on those knee pads and take it slow at first, and practice, practice, practice. Roller skating is a great workout! And we’re looking for skaters of all sizes and shapes - the main thing you need is a desire to play!

We DO ask that you be able to stay up on skates before you come out. A good goal for beginners is to skate a full lap around the skate floor without falling or hugging th wall.

What equipment do I need to play and how much will all this cost me?

Quad speed skates (the old-style roller skates, not inline skates) and protective gear: knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmets, and a mouth guard.

New quad speed skates cost $95 and up. Thrift stores a great place to find used starter skates for very little money. A set of starter pads can cost as little as $30. You can (and should) purchase upgraded pads at skateboard shops and mouth guards at most sporting good stores.

We have skates and gear you can borrow for your first few practices.

In addition to equipment, we also require each skater to pay for her own liability insurance (provided through the league $50/ year), her own jersies (~$100/ year), and practice fees ($35/ month).

Travel and other league expenses are covered by the league for participating skaters.

But what if I get hurt?

Well, this is a contact sport. Minor injuries are part of the game, but this is where your protective gear and your training come in! We practice falling as much as we practice skating, and you’ll learn techniques for minimizing any injury. Besides, whopping bruises are like a badge of honor!
